Akbar Indian Restaurant

The Akbar Indian Restaurant in Choeng Mon is the place to go when you are after some seriously good Indian food. Over the years many Indian restaurants have popped up around the island but some of them are considerably less than authentic than others, well here is one that is more than well worth a visit. If you are a visitor to Koh Samui it is worth eating here at the start of your trip, you are bound to want to go more than once!

Akbar is owned and run by Binod, a really friendly chap who has been satisfying Indian food lovers for over 20 years. Binod has spent 7 years on Koh Samui, 2 as an Indian Chef and 5 running his own Indian Restaurant.

 Akbar is a wonderful place to enjoy Indian cuisine at its finest; the restaurant itself is very clean and cheerful, smart but informal and very comfortable. There is both indoor and outdoor seating on a covered terrace from where you can watch the world meander by in one of the quieter areas of the island.
The Akbar offers a great selection of beers, spirits and soft drinks that will quench your thirst while you ponder the extensive menu. Why not enjoy a papadum or two while you are deciding, watch out for Binod’s special mint yoghurt sauce however, it is unusually and deliciously spicy!

The menu at Akbar is more than comprehensive; you would be hard pushed not to find what you are looking for here. Appetizers include the popular Onion Bahji, Samosas, vegetable, chicken or fish Pakora, Masala Papadum, Garden green, tuna or seafood salads. If you like to indulge in tastes straight from the tandoor try the chicken Tandoori, Tikka, harabhara Kebab, Garlic Tikka,, Kaulmi or Seek Kebab, the Tandoori mutton Sizzling is pretty unbeatable as is the Boti kebab and mutton seek kebab, you will also find Tandori fish and prawns.

The main course selections at the Akbar includes all of your favorites, Masala, Tikka Masala, Sag, Korma, Madrass, Dopiazza, Kadahi, Jalfrezi, Rogan Josh, Dansak, Balti, Bhuna, Vindaloo which can all be enjoyed with lamb, chicken, fish or vegetables. Vegetarian dishes include Aloo Gobi, Aloo Jeera, Bombay Aloo, Aloo Baigan, Aloo Matar, Aloo Palak and Matter Mushrooms.
Other items on the menu includde Paneer Khubai, Palak Paneer, Matar Paneer, Paneer Buttermasok, Dal, genuine Indian long grain rice that you can enjoy steamed, yellow, saffron, or Biryani. You will find a great selection of breads, Roti, Paratha, Tandoori Roti, Chapati, and the most delicious Naan you will find anywhere either plain, butter, aloo, garlic, vegetable or keema.

If you have any space left after you have eaten, and you will need to take along a good appetite as portions here are large, then finish off with some Indian dessert such as Gulab Jamin, rice pudding or mixed fruits and yoghurt.

The Akbar is a truly wonderful Indian restaurants that is well worth a visit and will delight your taste buds without upsetting your wallet!
