Bauhaus Bistro Lamai

With its fantastic reputation I am sure that many of you already enjoy dining at the popular Bauhaus Bistro in the main strip of Lamai, but if you don’t you are seriously missing out. For the last 15 years the Bauhaus has been serving superb home cooked food under the watchful eye of its owner, Glenda, a very friendly and down to earth English lady with a sunny disposition and an eye for detail.

The Bauhaus is a relaxed and informal place to enjoy delicious home cooked food in unique surroundings. The restaurant has two attractively lit waterfalls, tropical plants and a water feature that runs the length of the restaurant. With very high ceilings and giant natural wooden pillars you could be forgiven for thinking you were dining outdoors. The staff exude smiling Thai hospitality under the watchful eye of Glenda who insists on high quality, not only in terms of the quality of the food but in presentation, and that goes for the staff and the restaurant as well as the food.

With her English speaking friendly staff, top quality food and beautiful surroundings it is no surprise that Glenda has a recipe for success and quite a following. Bauhaus is very popular with the locals and visitors to the island come back to eat here year after year. The comprehensive menu is very reasonably priced and offers something for everybody. The No Name Chicken or Vegetables, an Indian Pakora with a Thai twist, is really delicious and the spring rolls are also very popular, both are served with sweet chili dip. The menu has a good selection of salads and authentic, seriously affordable, Thai food that can be toned up or down to your liking. The New Zealand tenderloin steaks are particularly delicious as are the home made pies and 4 or 8oz beef or chicken burgers that can be dressed up with eggs, bacon and cheese.

The Bauhaus does a hearty mixed grill, vegetable lasagna, Chicken Kiev, and serves some of the freshest seafood I have seen on the island which can be fried or steamed if you fancy the healthy option. If you are after something a bit different try the Thai specialty of raw prawns in fish sauce. Another great choice is the Roast Duck Curry, a southern specialty that is very popular and Pee Jit’s Penang Curry that she will cook for you on request is well worth a mention. For lighter meals try the baked potatoes with any combination of popular filings, baguettes or toasties.

The dessert menu features Glenda’s special Apple and Mango Crumble that is not to be missed as well as a selection of ice creams, banana split, fresh fruit salad and other delicious dishes. As well as the superb food menu, that is available in Russian, you will find a good selection of beers, cider, spirits and liquors’. Glenda offers an excellent selection of extremely affordable wines and the cocktails at the Bauhaus take some beating!
The Bauhaus is a great place to eat with friends or family, children are welcome and there are high chairs if you need them and children’s half portions are available. Premier games are shown, but without the sound so they can be watched without interrupting your dining experience.

This exceptional restaurant opens its doors at 2-30pm and the kitchen stays open until 11pm. The restaurant gets very busy at around 8pm, so book a table if you don’t want to be disappointed. Glenda closes her doors on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month to give her and her dedicated team of staff a well deserved day off!
