Catcandoo

Directly across from the Seatran Pier in Bangrak is one of Koh Samui’s best watering holes and, if you are a lover of ‘honest to goodness’ home cooked food that is served in healthy portions and only made with the best quality fresh ingredients, then you are not going to want to miss out on an evening, or two, at Catcandoo.

Catcandoo first appeared on Koh Samui over fourteen years ago and is the brain child of Jay, a personable guy from LA, who’s career in the USA lead him to spend a huge amount of time corporate entertaining. This lead to a love affair with fine dining and an interest in producing really good food. After a change of career, Jay found himself running his own restaurant and nightclub in the USA, and later came to live in Asia where he met a man in Nepal who wanted to invest in a similar venture, with Jay at the helm. Jay thought long and hard about the proposition but something drew him towards Thailand. He may not have taken up the offer in Nepal but he did honor it by naming his restaurant here Catcandoo after Katmandu Nepal’s capital city.

So, thankfully for us, Catcandoo opened its doors in Koh Samui and is now filling in the ‘good pub food’ gap that Jay found in the market. With his wife, Nam, and a team of long serving loyal staff, Jay has created a superb menu that is based on his favorite dishes, packed with home made salsas and sauces and cooked to perfection by his hand picked and hand trained team.

So what’s on offer? Well you can start the day with the Big Cat Breakfast. It’s the extra special breakfast with the extra special price that requires a huge appetite. The Mexican dishes are affordable and authentic, Jay’s homemade BBQ beans are as delicious as his home made guacamole, salsas and chili sauces and, if you fancy some Mexican with a twist, then try the Mexican Lasagna, Zingy Mexican Burger or the mouthwatering Mexican Pizza. Talking of Pizzas, the Catcandoo variety really hit the mark. Jay sees cooking as science so, when his tried tested recipe for the perfect pizza base didn’t work in the humidity of Thailand he sat down and worked out why. It didn’t take him long to fathom it out and now he has the Samui version down to perfection. Catcandoo pizzas are a whopping 17 inches and packed full of deliciously fresh toppings.

The ‘fall off the bone’ ribs at Catcandoo take some beating and come as a half, full or the whole pig rack and are drenched in the most delicious homemade BBQ sauce you can imagine. Keep an eye out for Jay’s Beef Ribs he often puts them on as a special and is constantly updating his menu. A steak lover himself, Jay knows how to serve the perfect Sirloin New York grain -fed Australian Steak. As well as a superb selection of appetizers, burgers, baguettes, chops, pastas and cordon bleu Catcandoo also has a superb Thai menu that offers affordable and authentic dishes from all over the country. Particularly noteworthy is the green curry that is made from a paste brought down from northern Thailand made by a friend of Jay’s wife. This unique paste has had customers trying to figure out the ingredients not only on Koh Samui but online.

Catcandoo is a lovely place to hang out, catch some sport on one of the two big screen TV’s, enjoy some friendly banter over a cold beer with the local expats and it will certainly satisfy your dining requirements. This friendly venue has a charming thatched bar area and tables that can accommodate romantic dinners for two as well as large parties.

If you don’t feel like going out you can still enjoy this heartily good food by using the delivery service on orders above three hundred baht with only a thirty baht delivery charge. If you are catering for large numbers then Jay and his team offer and outside catering service and can create specific menus to suit your individual requirements.

Catcandoo is open from 9am until 11-30pm but if you feel like hanging around later we have yet to see anybody thrown out! and you can enj0y 119 baht all you can eat Pizza on F1 weekends!
